A SCHOOL has launched an apprenticeship project to open pupils’ eyes to job and training opportunities on their doorsteps.

Woodham Academy, in Newton Aycliffe, has just begun its third annual apprenticeship challenge which will see all 150 year nine pupils work closely with companies on nearby Aycliffe Business Park.

Over nine weeks youngsters will visit companies including engineering, manufacturing, construction and civil and structural engineering firms to learn about what they do and discover what apprenticeships they offer.

They will also talk to current apprentices and those who have moved up the career ladder since completing one.

They will find out about the National Apprenticeship Service and how an apprenticeship could be a route into employment and higher education.

The project will culminate in a presentation evening for parents, staff, fellow students and company representatives.

Teacher Sarah McGinnety said: “When we first looked at this idea four years ago we realised students weren’t fully aware of the opportunities apprenticeships can offer and how many there are in the vicinity.

“We also felt we as staff didn’t know enough and therefore parents probably didn’t so this raises awareness for us all.

“Apprenticeships can be a really good option for someone who wants to start work and earning while training and maybe be put through university without the fees as a company might see them through.”
