A driver has sustained "life threatening injuries" following a collision with a van this morning.

The driver, who was in a Suzuki, was airlifted to hospital following the crash on the B6302 in Ushaw Moor at its junction with Broadgate Road at around 9:20am.

The driver of the Suzuki has been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the second vehicle, a Mercedes van, is uninjured.

A road closure between Broadgate Road and the B6302 between Ushaw Moor and Esh Winning is still in place.

A Durham Constabulary spokesperson said: "Emergency services are currently on scene at a collision on Broadgate Road, Ushaw Moor, on the junction with the B6302.

"The incident was reported to police at around 9.20am this morning (Thursday, April 25).

"A Suzuki car and Mercedes van are involved. The driver of the Suzuki has been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary with life-threatening injuries.

"The driver of the van is uninjured.

"Road closures are currently in place on Broadgate Road and the B6302 between Ushaw Moor and Esh Winning."

The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) earlier confirmed they have airlifted one person to hospital.

A spokesperson said: "Our critical care team was activated at 9.44am to reports of a road traffic collision in Ushaw Moor.

"We had a doctor and paramedic on board our aircraft and they arrived on scene at 9.55am.

"Our team assessed and treated a patient and airlifted them to hospital."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 9.17am this morning to reports of an RTC on the junction of the B6302 and Broadgate Road in Esh Winning, County Durham.

"We dispatched an ambulance crew, a rapid response paramedic, a clinical team leader, a crew from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), and requested support from our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) who attended via air.

"One patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) by air for further treatment."

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service added: "We are currently in attendance at a Road Traffic Collison on Ragpass Cottage Road, Esh Winning.

"A fire engine from Durham Fire Station and a fire engine from Spennymoor Fire Station are dealing with the incident involving 2 vehicles."
