DARLINGTON MOWDEN PARK scrum-half Callum Pascoe feels his side are ‘on the right track’ after a mixed start to the National One season.

Last weekend saw Mowden produce their best performance of the campaign so far as they took maximum points from their trip to Richmond courtesy of a 34-24 victory.

After six rounds of matches, Mowden sit tenth in the table, with their tally of three victories and three defeats underlining the up-and-down nature of their fortunes so far.

Garry Law’s side return to home soil this weekend when they host Birmingham Moseley at the Darlington Arena, and having successfully distanced themselves from the relegation zone, Pascoe is hoping he and his team-mates can continue their push up the table on Saturday afternoon.

“We would have hoped to be a few places higher in the league at this stage, but a positive is that we are improving as a team each week and putting in good performances,” said Pascoe. “So, we need to make sure we go into every game with the same attitude we did on Saturday.”

Last weekend’s win at Richmond’s Athletic Ground was Mowden’s first success at the ground for more than seven years, with the south-west London club having been relegated from the Championship last season.

Mowden ran in five tries to secure their first winning bonus point of the season, with Pascoe having been justifiably pleased with his side’s display.

“It was a great win away from home,” said the number nine. “After coming from two losses, we knew we had to go out there and make a statement, and I think the performance backed that up.”

A win against Birmingham Moseley on Saturday would see Mowden leapfrog their opponents, who sit two points ahead of them in the table.

Mowden will be hoping to maintain their fine recent record against the Midlands-based opposition, with Moseley having won just one of their last six matches at the Arena.

Pascoe accepts Mowden will have to be wary of their opponents’ physical threat, but is confident of a home win provided his side stick to their principles and look to feed off the positive momentum that was generated last weekend.

“Moseley are a very strong side,” he said. “Playing them last year, it was two very tight games and then it was the same again this pre-season.

“They’re a physical side who like to get on top of teams, and also have the pace outside to finish chances off, but we back our ability and the way we play. After Saturday, there’s a lot of confidence in the squad, so it should shape up to be a great game.”

Saturday’s National One fixture has been brought forward, and will kick off at the earlier time of 2.15pm to enable supporters to watch the Rugby World Cup quarter-final between Wales and Argentina, which will follow at 4pm.
